Sunderland and Chris Coleman will surely be itching to start tearing things up in the summer window and starting again at the club.

The men from the Stadium of Light are heading for League One and so surely they'll now start clearing the decks - though some would say that's 12 months too late.

Even so, it's better late than never and it'll be interesting to see who is left of the squad once the serious amount of deadwood is shipped out.

Whilst we wait to see who leaves, though, we've been thinking about who might come into the club to help them get promoted once more.

They need hungry, professional players to come in and so, using transfermarkt's Premier League and Championship free agent guides, we've taken a look at six the club should consider a move for...

Meyler is a solid midfielder whose contract runs out in the summer.

The Irishman has been at Hull for some time but has been in and out of the team this season.

In recent weeks he's played more and done well but if Hull do not decide to make him a firm offer and get it done, Sunderland should look to pounce.

Van den Berg is a solid, hard-working midfielder in the middle of the pitch.

He'd add some extra granite to Sunderland's side as they look to become tougher to beat.

Whether or not he'd want to make the step down remains to be seen but if Reading do not want him he is up for grabs.

Mackie had it confirmed a few weeks ago that he would not be getting a new deal at QPR and so he'll surely be looking around for new employment.

He's got plenty to offer the right club with him boasting bags of experience and in League One he should be able to score some important goals.

Sunderland certainly need more firepower.

Lowe has struggled at Birmingham and could be up for a move away - especially if the Blues stay up and then sign more players under Garry Monk.

He always gives his all and will never shy away from a challenge so he would prove a hit at the Stadium of Light if the Black Cats signed him.

Marney is a player who it seems Burnley are willing to let go in the summer.

Championship clubs might be sniffing around but if there's one League One side that can get after him it is probably Sunderland.

Providing they get new owners soon the Black Cats and the challenge could be a draw for a number of players.

Robinson is the other QPR man we could see as an ideal acquisition for Sunderland.

He's got plenty of ability and is arguably too good for League One so, really, it's only the Black Cats and Chris Coleman that might be able to attract him.

Certainly, Sunderland need to improve things defensively and Robinson would help that happen.
