Queens Park Rangers are set to sign Angel Rangel on a free transfer.

According to The Sun, free agent Rangel is close to agreeing a deal to join Steve McClaren at QPR following his release by Swansea City at the end of last season.

The 35-year-old offers vast experience for QPR - which is something McClaren has stressed he needs - having played 169 Premier League games for Swansea.

During his whole time with the Swans, the Spaniard racked up 374 appearances, having started with the club when they were in the third tier.

He was released by the South Wales outfit at the end of June and he has been training with QPR.

The Hoops have held discussions with the veteran defender and expect to wrap this deal up shortly.

Rangel provides cover at the back after Darnell Furlong was ruled out for up to three months with injury.

The Verdict

Rangel might be past his peak but his vast experience will be helpful for QPR, on and off the field.

At Championship level, the Spanish defender can still do a job, although he is past the days of running up and down the right flank.

But off the pitch will be where he is most useful, acting as a mentor for the younger players at QPR.
