QPR move one step closer to signing Derby County player

Published

Derby County goalkeeper David Marshall is reportedly having a medical at QPR this morning ahead of a potential loan move.

Reports emerged yesterday indicating that the R’s were closing in on a move for Marshall as they looked to bolster their options between the sticks.

According to The Athletic, the 36-year-old is undergoing a medical with the west London club this morning.

It is understood that Marshall, who has more than 400 Championship appearances to his name but has fallen out of favour under Wayne Rooney this season, is available as the Rams are trying to cut costs in adminstration.

R’s first-choice keeper Seny Dieng is currently on international duty with Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations while backup Jordan Archer suffered a shoulder injury in the FA Cup victory against Rotherham United on Saturday.

Should Dieng’s side reach the final of the competition, he could be unavailable until mid-February.

The Verdict

This looks like a move that works for all parties, so it’s no surprise that things appear to be moving quickly.

The injury to Archer was a hammer blow for the R’s given Dieng is set to miss up to a month during AFCON.

With a trip to West Bromwich Albion ahead of them, bringing in reinforcements quickly was always likely to be important and it seems the west London club have done just that.

Marshall has been out of favour this term but he’s proven his quality at Championship level time after time and he should be a very useful stopgap.
