Queens Park Rangers are in talks to sign Jake Clarke-Salter on a free transfer.

The 24-year-old had been contracted to Chelsea but his deal is expiring in the coming weeks and it has already been confirmed that he will be leaving.

Therefore, the left-footer is on the lookout for a new club, with Sheffield United and Coventry City among those believed to be monitoring the player.

However, according to Football Insider, it's the R's who have made the first move, as they have begun discussions with Clarke-Salter as they look to make him potentially the first signing of the Michael Beale era.

But, it won't be straightforward, as the update also reiterates the fellow Championship interest in the defender, with Coventry said to be particularly keen.

The Sky Blues may have the advantage in the race though, as Clarke-Salter played for Mark Robins' side on loan last season, playing 29 games as they recorded a top-half finish.

Beale is sure to be busy as he looks to reshape the R's squad ahead of his first season in management.

The verdict

This would be a good signing for QPR as Clarke-Salter has proven himself to be a good player at this level over the years in various loan spells.

As well as that, he would seem to fit the way Beale wants to play, in that he is a modern defender who can play out from the back and play high up the pitch.

So, this would be a good bit of business if they can get if over the line, although there will still be work to do given the interest in the player.
