Queens Park Rangers are interested in a short-term deal for free agent Angel Rangel.

West London Sport is reporting that manager Steve McClaren is still keen on the former Swansea defender.

The Rs boss is the lookout for defensive bolstering during the loan window after missing out on targets during deadline day to cover for the injured Darnell Furlong.

Michael Hefele was a late target for the former England boss before Nottingham Forest hijacked the deal and the German moved to the City Ground.

Having missed out on an experienced target, McClaren is going to have to use the loan window and the free agent market to add to his young side.

The Hoops only made one summer signing, defender Toni Leistner from Union Berlin, who has since been made captain at Loftus Road.

Having missed out on previous targets, a lack of depth in many positions and injuries potentially hindering the side, a move for the former Swansea man looks on the cards.

Rangel spent 11 years at the Liberty Stadium, making 328 appearances for the Swans and was an integral part of their remarkable rise to the Premier League.

The Spanish defender only made seven appearances for the Welsh side last season before being released in the summer.

The Verdict

With Queens Park Rangers already light at the back and with another injury to Darnell Furlong, defensive bolstering is more necessary than ever for Steve McClaren at Loftus Road.

The 35-year-old defender is a free agent, and if it is a reported short-term deal that is agreed, then that seems like a reasonably inexpensive way to add vast experience to your ranks.

Having only seen one arrival this summer, the loan window will now be crucial for McClaren if he is to add quality to his side as they look to make their mark on the Championship before the next window opens in the New Year.

Rangel was a stalwart at Swansea, and even at his age, he could do a job for the second-tier side.

Above all, his experience would be an endless source of knowledge for the younger players, and he would be a calm, experienced head that McClaren is crying out for.

This could be a rather smart addition should it be confirmed.
