Queens Park Rangers 'made the best offer they could' for Nahki Wells last month.

Wells, 29, is now a Bristol City player. But he began the season with QPR in what was a second-straight, season-long loan from Burnley and had been in some of his career best form.

The Bermudan had netted 15 goals in all competitions for QPR before being initially recalled by Burnley last month, including a New Year's Day hat-trick against Cardiff City.

Sean Dyche was hopeful of selling Wells when he recalled him with a week of the window left to go. Bristol City always looked the favourites, and it was always going to be out of QPR's price range - in the end, a deal worth £5 million plus Josh Brownhill was agreed upon with Burnley.

Speaking to The Brent & Kilburn Times about Wells departure, director of football Les Ferdinand said the club made the best offer they could for the striker:

"We had Nahki and he was doing so well, and unfortunately we couldn't afford to buy him from Burnley. We knew that, hence why we took him on loan at the start of the season.

"When someone comes in on loan you want them to do their job and his job was to score goals and he did that pretty well. Unfortunately when people do their job well others are going to come looking and that's what happened.

"We knew it was touch and go, we made the best offer we could but Bristol City made him a better one and unfortunately he decided to go there."

Play-off hopefuls Bristol City have now lost their last three in the Championship, but Wells has been an ever-present in the starting line-up, playing six times in the league so far and scoring once.

The verdict

QPR fans would've loved to see Wells stay, but he was always going to be out of the club's price range. Wages and transfer fee, QPR aren't the free-spending club that they once were, but fans will always wonder what might've been if Wells had joined QPR permanently.

He loved the club and vice-versa, and fans will be hoping he can turn around his new club's season, and get back to the Premier League where he belongs.
