Queens Park Rangers defender Angel Rangel has spoken out following the sacking of Steve McClaren on Monday.

The experienced defender was brought to Loftus Road by McClaren back in the summer after leaving Swansea, and thanked his former boss for the gesture.

Taking to Twitter, the Spaniard wrote:

“Very sad to see Steve McClaren go.

“I’ll always be grateful to him for the opportunity he gave me when nobody else did!

“A great MAN full of respect for everyone, a very hard working COACH and what I can say one of the best MANAGERS I’ve played for in my career. THANK YOU!”

After a slow start to the season, results began to pick up for McClaren just before christmas, taking his side to within touching distance of the play-offs.

But 10 losses in their last 13 matches dragged the Rs right back into a relegation scrap, with last weekend’s loss to Bolton Wanderers the final straw for the board.

This weekend sees them travel to Hull City as they look to move away from the basement battle, currently sat just seven points clear.

The verdict

Angel Rangel is clearly a top professional and this just confirms it further.

And he is right as well. McClaren has always been praised for his coaching abilities but his handling of an entire club has frequently been called into question.

He will not be out of work for long.
