QPR closing in on deal for player who recently left Championship rivals

QPR are interested in completing the signing of goalkeeper Jordan Archer, journalist Alan Nixon has revealed.

Archer is currently a free agent, having been released by another Championship side, Middlesbrough, at the end of last season.

The goalkeeper had joined ‘Boro on a short-term deal back in January, and made four appearances for the club before leaving The Riverside Stadium following the expiry of his contract this summer.

Did these 20 midfielders ever score a goal for QPR?

Now though, it appears as though it will now be long before Archer finds himself back in the Championship.

According to this latest update, Archer is close to completing a move to QPR, with a deal said to be “likely”.

It is thought that Liam Kelly is set to leave QPR to make the move north of the border to Scotland, meaning Mark Warburton’s side will need to provide cover for Seny Dieng between the posts, prompting this interest in Archer.

QPR have already made four senior signings this summer. Charlie Austin Jordy De Wijs and Sam Field have already made last season’s loans permanent, while Andre Dozzell has joined from Ipswich.

The Verdict

I do think that this would be a good signing for QPR.

We have already seen Joe Lumley leave the club this summer, ironically to Middlesbrough, and if Kelly is indeed on his way out as well, then they are going to need to add to their goalkeeping options.

Archer will of course be able to fill that role, and he has proven in the past to be a solid option in that position at this level, having been first choice at Millwall for several years.

He has however, been further down the pecking order at the likes of Fulham and ‘Boro in recent years, meaning he could be willing to fill that sort of role at QPR.

The fact that he is available on a free also means this makes sense from a financial perspective, so it does seem as though this could be a smart piece of business from Warburton’s side.
