QPR manager Mark Warburton has told talkSPORT that Steven Gerrard made the right decision by turning down interest from Derby County.

Gerrard reportedly turned down an approach from Derby to speak to them regarding the club's manager job, with Frank Lampard set to be appointed as Chelsea's new boss.

Lampard is thought to be on the verge of replacing Maurizio Sarri as the Blues's boss after he joined Juventus, and the Rams have already pinpointed Gerrard as a potential replacement for his former midfield partner.

The Rangers boss secured a second-placed finish for Rangers in the Scottish Premiership last season as Old Firm rivals Celtic lifted the title, and he still has three years remaining on his Ibrox contract.

Newly appointed R's boss Warburton believes Gerrard has made the right call and should stick with Rangers, as he could write his name into the club's history by ending Celtic's dominance.

“I think Steven would be very keen, I’m sure, to stay at that great club, take it forward, stop Celtic’s run and establish himself as a legend within the club," he told talkSPORT.

“Derby is a fantastic Championship club with fantastic support, but in Glasgow Rangers you have a real institution there."

The Verdict

It was not a surprise to see Gerrard turn down Derby's early advances, particularly given that Lampard has not even been appointed as Chelsea manager yet.

I think Warburton is correct in that Gerrard's performance as Rangers boss last season suggests he is on to a good thing at the club, and it would take a highly attractive offer to lure him away from Ibrox.

However, I believe a move to Derby could really help add fuel to Gerrard's managerial career progression, as it could result in him becoming a Premier League manager.

The ultimate aim for Gerrard will be to become Liverpool manager, so he must make a decision based on what is best for him and his career. I think Warburton's comments are correct, but Gerrard must also think ahead.
