Steve McClaren could be set for a shock return to management with QPR set to turn to the former England manager to replace Ian Holloway.

Even though the current R's boss has a year left on his contract and has no intention of leaving, reports emerged yesterday linking McClaren with the job at Loftus Road.

And, things have developed further today with Laurie Whitwell, a reporter for the Daily Mail, revealing that the ex-Derby boss has agreed terms with the London club to be their new manager.

Despite taking the club to a comfortable 16th place finish with very few concerns about relegation, a section of fans were unhappy with how the season had gone under Holloway.

Many felt the style of play wasn't good enough given the talented youngsters he has at his disposal.

That suggests the board see McClaren as someone who can encourage a more attacking, attractive style of play for next season.

The 57-year old was sacked from his last managerial role at Derby in March 2017 and his last role in football ended in December when he left his role as a coaching consultant at Maccabi Tel-Aviv.

The Verdict

This is a very surprising move from QPR and a very big risk at the same time.

McClaren is well-respected as a coach, including a spell at QPR, but he hasn't convinced in his last few managerial jobs.

If they are prepared to sack Holloway then it should be for a bold, dynamic new approach. It's hard to see how things will change that much under McClaren.
