Portsmouth had a solid season last year as they finished the league sat tenth in the table.

However, Danny Cowley will be hoping his side are able to push further up the League One table next season.

One player they will be hoping is around to participate in the effort is Marcus Harness who was a standout player for Pompey last season making 40 league appearances and scoring 11 goals.

Therefore, it comes as little surprise that there has been interest in the player from elsewhere this summer.

With that in mind, we asked FLW's Portsmouth fan pundit Tom Chappell whether he expects to see the 26-year-old leave Fratton Park this summer: "That's a question for the ages on Marcus Harness leaving. Put him in the same umbrella as Ronan Curtis in terms of its run of the mill rumour transfer window, you see articles, people talking about whether he's going to leave or not.

"If you're asking me do I want Marcus Harness to leave this summer, the answer's no.

"If you think I expect Marcus Harness to leave this summer I'd probably say yes.

"In reality will he leave this summer? I would probably again say no.

"It's one of those where you want the best for him because he's really talented, he's just got a bit of an inconsistent nature to his performance.

"There's probably only a handful of players better down that side in an attacking sense, moving forward with the ball at his feet, running at full pelt than Marcus Harness, I can't think of many that do it better than him.

"But, not ten out of ten every week reliable crossing or whatever. It's sort of 6 out of ten times he will put a very good ball in and it will lead to a goal scoring opportunity of a goal, the other four times out of ten it will end up over the crossbar or in row Z or wherever it ends up. So I think the inconsistency hinders him and I think that's probably part of the reason why he hasn't headed off towards a Championship club.

"I know Swansea are interested, there's various other clubs that have expressed that they're interested in him, I just don't think he'll go because his price tag that we'll want for him will be too much and perhaps they won't want to stump up that much money for someone who is pretty much in his prime years now and is not performing on a consistently regular basis that is needed for the Championship."

The Verdict:

It's not hard to see why there's interest in the player this summer given how well he did for Portsmouth last season and it's also no surprise that the Pompey fans are wanting him to stay at the club.

However, like Tom says, Portsmouth will probably value him differently to interested clubs this summer which could lead to a deal not happening.

He is a key player for Pompey so it's no surprise that they would want compensation. However, given he only has a year remaining on his contract, Portsmouth should watch out not to set the asking price too high.
