Wigan Athletic managed to reclaim a spot in the League One automatic promotion places last night with a narrow 2-1 victory over Shrewsbury Town.

The Latics pushed up the third tier standings to second place and find themselves level on points with Rotherham United who lead the way.

Tendayi Darikwa opened the scoring for the hosts with just two minutes on the clock when he arrived at the back post to meet James McClean’s cross from the left flank.

Ryan Bowman restored parity six minutes before the break when he tapped in from a yard out following a swift break.

The winner came in the 92nd minute when 19-year-old The Aasgaard unleashed an effort into the bottom corner from 30 yards out.

Putting in a good shift on his league debut, Joe Bennett provided defensive stability and attacking drive from the left back position.

He lasted 78 minutes and will be hoping to emerge as a regular in the north-west following his drop down from the Championship.

The full-back made his EFL Trophy debut late last month, with Wigan winning the tie on penalties.
