Last summer proved to be a slow-moving one for Sheffield Wednesday, with the bulk of their business being done in the latter stages of the window.

Ensuring that does not happen once more, the Owls made a fast start to this summer's window, adding quality options in relatively early.

Once again expected to do well in League One, Darren Moore will be using pre-season to continue assessing his options ahead of an important campaign at Hillsborough.

Speaking to Football League World about whether he can see the Owls dipping into the transfer market even further, Carlton Palmer said: "I still see him going after a wide player and a striker before the transfer window shuts.

"He may also wait to see what happens with the Premier League. A lot of the clubs don't make the decision about players going out on loan later on until they know where their squads are and when the season is. So, he may wait to utilise that.

But I think he just wants to cover all angles, whether he plays 3-5-2, or he has to change the system to a 4-4-2, and that means having the players to be able to do that."

The verdict

A player that fits both the descriptions provided by Palmer, Mallik Wilks is still actively being chased by the Owls, although it remains to be seen if a fee can be agreed.

Palmer is certainly correct when he says about Moore needing to ensure that there is competition for places regardless of the formation.

The Premier League loan market is of course another avenue to go down, and whilst these top-tier outfits may not have made final decisions regarding certain personnel, Moore will have targets in mind.

Sheffield Wednesday are certainly in the concluding stages of their summer business and they are just applying the finishing touches it would seem.
