Derby County are striving to lure David McGoldrick down to League One for the upcoming 2022/23 campaign, with the Rams exiting administration, however, they are set to face higher-level competition with Middlesbrough also in pursuit.

Now under Liam Rosenior, the Rams will be hoping to complete business quickly as they prepare for the start of the season at the end of this month.

Adding quality at League One level already, with the additions of Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, Joe Wildsmith and Tom Barkhuizen, Rosenior will be looking to continue this high-standard approach to their business ahead of the opening clash with Oxford United.

Issuing a glowing verdict of the experienced forward Derby are currently chasing, Carlton Palmer told Football League World: "I really like him as a football player. I liked him when he was at Sheffield United.

"I mean, he's not prolific as a goal scorer. He weighs in with goals but he's not prolific. But, in terms of his heading ability, his link-up play, his hold-up play, his commitment to the team is phenomenal.

"Any club that gets McGoldrick, they've got a very, very good player there."

The verdict

Ticking a lot of boxes at Championship level, McGoldrick could tear League One apart, if his next move is to the Midlands.

A player that causes all sorts of problems with his intelligent football mind and excellent ability with the ball at his feet, he is also a player who poses a physical threat.

As Palmer says, he is not the most prolific striker in the world, however, he has still consistently scored goals throughout his career.

It will be interesting to see if Derby can win the race for the experienced forward, with the potential addition of McGoldrick an exciting one for Derby fans.
