Danny Mills has warned Aston Villa that they risk losing John McGinn in the summer transfer window if they fail to gain promotion to the Premier League.

McGinn has enjoyed an outstanding debut season at Villa Park having joined from Hibernian last summer, helping the Midlands side to reach the Championship play-off final for the second consecutive season, where they will face Derby County at Wembley on the 27th May, while also picking up numerous personal awards.

Mills feels that failure to beat The Rams in that promotion decider, they will miss out on more than just promotion, with the former England international claiming that McGinn could be set for a move to the Premier League with another top tier side.

Speaking to Football Insider about McGinn, Mills claimed: “If Villa don’t get promotion, they could lose McGinn, there has been a lot of talk about him, Premier League teams are sniffing around him, and that’s because he’s played very well and surprised a few people.

“It depends on what happens in the play-off final. If Villa don’t get to the Premier League, clubs will go, ‘tell you what, we will have a dabble at him.”

McGinn has made 43 appearances during his debut campaign in the Midlands, and has a contract with the club until the summer of 2022.

The Verdict

It would be no surprise if this was to happen.

McGinn has been outstanding for Villa this season, and there will surely be plenty of sides who feel he is ready to step up to the top tier if Villa don't make it.

With McGinn unlikely to be the only Villa player attracting interest from the top tier in the summer, you feel it is essential the Midlands side complete the job against Derby at Wembley.
