Noel Whelan believes Connor Goldson would be a smart addition for Nottingham Forest after they were linked with the Rangers man.

The centre-back has been excellent for the Glasgow outfit since making the move from Brighton and he was key as Steven Gerrard's side lifted the title last season, ending Celtic's period of dominance north of the border.

However, with his deal up in the summer, there are doubts about Goldson's long-term future and reports suggested the Reds will rival West Brom for the defender.

And, speaking to Football Insider, pundit Whelan explained why it would be a great bit of business for Forest if they can get it over the line.

"Nottingham Forest is a great club with a lot of history. They’ve got a manager who has turned their fortunes around and got them fighting for promotion. If they’re in the Premier League next season, it could prove to be a brilliant move. If not, then it’s still not the worst move in the world.

"He’ll shine through in the Championship. I think he’d be a perfect fit for a club like Forest."

The verdict

You can't really argue with Whelan's point here as Goldson would be an excellent signing for Forest, no matter what division they are in.

His performances for Rangers, particularly in the past 18 months, have been superb and to get him on a free transfer would be a bargain.

Whether they can convince him to join whilst they are in the Championship remains to be seen but Forest are an attractive option to players and it will be interesting to see how this plays out.
