Paul Robinson has backed Alfie McCalmont to replace Kalvin Phillips for the clash with Millwall, but admits it could be 'a gamble'.

Phillips has been handed a three-match ban after a reckless challenge of Queens Park Rangers defender Geoff Cameron during Leeds United's 1-0 defeat at the weekend.

With options somewhat limited in reserve, Marcelo Bielsa faces something of a selection headache as he searches for a player to replace the 23-year-old.

McCalmont has limited first team experience, but according to the former goalkeeper, it seems like a decision that Bielsa will be forced to make.

Asked if he should start against Millwall, Robinson told MOT Leeds News: "Without a doubt.

"However, it’s a blow that we haven’t got someone equally as good to bring in.

“McCalmont is 19-years-old and he has only played 65 minutes in the League Cup.

“Players of that age, and of little experience, being used for a Premier League push… it’s a gamble. However, it’s a gamble they have to take.

“There clearly isn’t the strength in depth to cope with losing the likes of Phillips for three games.”

The verdict

Kalvin Phillips' sending off has certainly caused a problem for Leeds United.

While the 23-year-old's frustration during the 1-0 defeat to Queens Park Rangers was understandable, there's no excuse for putting in such a reckless challenge.

That fixtures was clearly getting away from Leeds, but his suspension makes the task facing the Whites even tougher in weeks ahead.

Alfie McCalmont might not be the man to throw into such a high-pressure environment, but unless Marcelo Bielsa can shuffle his pack it may be the only option available to him.

Let's just hope that he can handle the pressure that the promotion-contenders are currently under.
