Noel Whelan believes that Leeds United would be making a smart signing for the future if they can finalise a deal for Wigan Athletic's Sean McGurk.

The 17-year-old is extremely highly-rated by the Latics but they have a major battle on their hands to keep the player as the Premier League outfit circle.

The Whites have already had a bid for McGurk rejected and reports over the weekend suggested another offer is forthcoming as Leeds look to bring the teenager in during the January window.

And, speaking to Football Insider, former player Whelan explained how the Yorkshire outfit are planning for the long-term and he believes McGurk would fit into that.

"At the minute the academy is looking really good. Category one gives us the option to go and buy players and play other sides in the category as well.

"This is what we need. Everything is being put in place at the football club with the younger generation and we’re spending a bit of money in that area."

If McGurk does move to Elland Road, he would follow former teammate Joe Gelhardt who made the switch in the previous window.

The verdict

You can't really argue with what Whelan says as there has been a major focus at Leeds to improve the academy over the past 18 months or so.

They have identified talented youngsters and they haven't been afraid to pay decent sums to bring players in and they will hope to benefit from that in the years to come.

It remains to be seen if McGurk does make the move but it's one that you can see happening in the New Year.
