Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has admitted he is surprised by reports linking the club with a move for Chelsea right-back Reece James.

It was recently claimed that the Championship promotion chasers are considering a loan move for James in January transfer window, with the defender having apparently been a long-term target for the club.

James enjoyed an outstanding season on loan in second-tier with Wigan Athletic last season, making 46 appearances in all competitions for the Latics, winning the club's Player of the Year award and earning a place in the EFL's Team of the Year.

Despite that, it seems Whelan is unconvinced by Leeds' potential move for the 19-year-old, due to the other right-back options the club currently possess.

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan was asked if he was surprised by the rumours, with the 44-year-old responding: "Yes! It's strange.

“Obviously Luke Ayling is back now, you’ve got Stuart Dallas who undoubtedly has been one of the best players for Leeds this season in my opinion, so it’s a position we look healthy in.

“It’s not like we’re going to be lacking options as there are so many that can play that role, even Shackleton can play right-back or as a right-wingback."

Discussing the possible reasons for a move for James, Whelan suggested that the only reason he believes Leeds may look to do a deal for the teenager would be to cover another position, as he added: “Unless they’re thinking they can utilise him in other positions, it does seem a bit strange as right-back is one area we are covered and have quality players to cover if there are injuries or suspensions.”

After suffering ankle ligament damage while on duty with England's Under 20s during the summer, James has made just two appearances for Chelsea this season, with the right-back scoring his first goal for the club in a 7-1 thrashing of Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup.

The Verdict

I do agree with Whelan here.

James was quite simply outstanding for Wigan last season, but it just doesn't seem as though Leeds need another right-back.

Stuart Dallas has been very impressive in that position so this season, while first-choice in that position, Luke Ayling, is now back from injury, and with the pair recently signing new contracts at Elland Road, it is hard to see James getting in ahead of them in that position.

Indeed, given the scrutiny there already is on Leeds about the lack of game time for on-loan Eddie Nketiah and Jack Clarke this season, you have to wonder whether bringing another loan player in to compete for a position they are already well covered in would be a smart decision.
