Former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell has told Football Insider that he believes the Gunners should make a bid for Middlesbrough defender Djed Spence this month.

The 21-year-old is currently out on loan with Boro's divisional rivals Nottingham Forest and has so far impressed many with his performances at the City Ground under Steve Cooper.

As a result there was talk that the full back could be recalled by the North East club, however it was agreed that it was best for the former Fulham youngster to remain with the Reds until the end of the campaign.

However the defender's fine form has now attracted interest from the Premier League, with Campbell now claiming that he feels Arsenal should move for Spence:

"I think it would be very smart business to get him in. He'd give Mikel Arteta another option, that's for sure.

"Get him in and beat Spurs to the deal."

Also a target for Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United, the 21-year-old faces a seemingly uncertain future as the transfer window continues.

However Boro can rest easy over the fact that the player is under contract with them until the summer of 2023.

The Verdict

Middlesbrough will be well aware that Spence is set to attract interest from other clubs, as he has been performing out of his skin since moving to Forest on loan.

There is no doubt that they may regret their decision to let him leave but at the same time he is still their player, so it is up to them what happens next.

He is still young and has a lot to improve upon before he can even think about playing in the top flight but at the same time it is his potential that attracts the top clubs.

It will be interesting to see what happens between now and the end of January.
