Tim Sherwood believes that automatic promotion is already out of reach for Sheffield United after their poor start to the season.
Many had Slavisa Jokanovic’s men as favourites for one of the top two spots this season after they managed to keep hold of several key men whilst also appointing the former Fulham chief, who is proven at this level.
However, they are languishing in the bottom half at this early stage, having managed just one win from their opening seven games, with the Blades throwing away two points last night as Preston scored in stoppage time to snatch a draw.
And, speaking before that game to Sky Sports, as quoted by the Sheffield Star, Sherwood explained why he doesn’t think automatic promotion is possible now, even if they can still push for the play-offs.
“They still have good enough players to be in and around it, but I think even the start they have had rules them out for automatics. They are capable of nicking points but are they going to get automatic promotion? They wouldn’t be my bet no, I think they need to change a lot more.”
22 things all Sheffield United fans simply must know – But do you?
This is slightly surprising as there are still 39 games left to play, so it’s far too soon to write any team off.
Clearly, Sherwood also has doubts whether the Blades are good enough, as he called on them to change more, and you can’t really argue with that, as last night proved again there are issues with the side.
But, if things do click for Sheffield United, they can still push up the table and with Jokanovic’s teams having historically ended well in the Championship, anything is possible.
