Darren Bent has claimed that Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips would be a good addition for Manchester United, following the recent reports that the Premier League club are interested in signing him.

Phillips was one of the standout player for Leeds in the Championship last season and transformed himself into one of the best defensive midfielders outside of the top flight under the guidance of head coach Marcelo Bielsa.

The 23-year-old has been an extremely important player for Leeds this season too, starting every game for the Whites in all competitions, and recently signed a new five-year contract at Elland Road.

The Sun reported earlier today that Manchester United are interested in signing Phillips, as manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to add more talented young players to his side.

Former Premier League striker Bent is a big admirer of Phillips and believes he'd be a good signing for Manchester United as he's good enough to make the step up to the top flight and is exactly the type of player that Solskjaer is looking for.

“Yeah that would be a good signing,” Bent told Football Insider, when asked if Phillips would be good enough to play for Manchester United.

“I’ve said this before but I still can’t believe he is not playing in the Premier League side that’s how good he is, I thought Tottenham or Aston Villa may get him in the summer but that didn’t happen.

“But yeah he fits into what Man United are trying to build, young, hungry players and what a signing he could be if they get a deal done as he is a very talented player.”

The Verdict

Phillips is a very talented footballer. He was magnificent for Leeds last season and has transformed himself into one of the best defensive midfielders in the Championship under the guidance of Bielsa.

I agree with what Bent is saying here. Phillips has got so much potential and I think he's good enough to play in the Premier League. He could be a good signing for Manchester United, but I just can't see him leaving Leeds to join their bitter rivals.

Phillips is a local lad and he's risen through the ranks at Elland Road. He's just signed a new five-year deal with Leeds and I'd be totally shocked if he decided to leave the club for Old Trafford.
