Kevin Campbell believes that John Terry is ready to make the step into management after he was named as a leading contender for the Derby County job.

The Rams made the decision to sack Phillip Cocu during the November international break, with Wayne Rooney part of the setup that has lead the team in recent games.

Whilst the England legend is keen on the job, it's his former Three Lions teammate who could land the role, with Sky Sports claiming Terry is firmly in the frame.

And, speaking to Football Insider, Campbell explained why it's a move that would certainly appeal to Terry.

"Terry has been working behind the scenes and he has gathered a lot of experience while he’s been at Aston Villa. Of course, he has played under Jose Mourinho and other top managers throughout his career so he will have a great knowledge and ideas.

"The time might be right for him to go and manage and I am sure everybody at Aston Villa will wish him well when that time and opportunity arises."

Derby are seemingly waiting for their takeover to happen before a permanent manager is announced.

The verdict

There won't be many who disagree with Campbell here, and the chance to manage a club like Derby is going to appeal greatly to Terry.

Whilst some fans will be concerned by his lack of experience, the fact Terry has been involved with Villa, working on a daily basis and understanding what's required to do well, is a major positive.

Ultimately, a decision is going to be made soon, and it will be interesting to see whether Terry gets the job.
