Writing in his column for the Yorkshire Evening Post, David Prutton has confirmed he believes Garry Monk was more deserving of the Sky Bet Championship manager of the season award than David Wagner.

Huddersfield Town’s Wagner was named as manager of the year earlier this week, having led the Terriers to third in the Championship table, and challenging for promotion to the Premier League.

However, Prutton believes Monk, whose Leeds United side are currently fourth and also challenging for promotion, has impressed more than his German counterpart this season.

Prutton highlights Leeds’ off-field issues with Massimo Cellino and their poor start to the season, which saw them sitting in the bottom-three after September’s defeat to Huddersfield, as reasons the former Swansea manager deserved the award.

He wrote: “The more I think about it, the more I reckon that Garry Monk is manager of the year.

“That’s not a slight on anyone and it doesn’t diminish the impact of coaches like Wagner or (Chris) Hughton but you have to put this into context and consider the prospects each of them had when the season began.

“If we’re being honest about Monk, who seriously expected him to make it to Christmas? Did many people think he’d survive through the autumn, particularly after a poor start?”

Along with sitting a place higher thank Monk’s Leeds, Wagner’s side have also done the double over their West Yorkshire rivals this season, recording a 1-0 victory at Elland Road and following that up with a 2-1 triumph in February’s reverse.
