Tony Cascarino has been critical of Tony Pulis' negative approach after he was named as the new Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls sacked Garry Monk on Monday and they wasted little time in securing his replacement, with Pulis announced as his successor last night.

And, it's fair to say it's a decision that has split opinion. Whilst the 62-year-old has won promotion from the Championship before and has never been relegated as a manager, he does attract criticism for his style of play.

Pulis favours a long-ball style and his success has been built on a solid defensive foundation.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, former Ireland international Cascarino revealed he isn't too keen on the approach and feels the modern game benefits those who take more risks, although he did acknowledge Pulis has got results over the years.

"If you could get 12 players out on the pitch, he’d have 12 behind the ball. I’m not his biggest fan.

"The problem you’ve got is the modern game doesn’t allow you to defend or be pragmatic very well. The game is rewarding attacking teams and Tony’s never really done that."

The verdict

This is a topic that is already causing a debate among the fan base and in truth, it follows Pulis wherever he goes.

The reality is that he doesn't play the most attractive brand of football, as Cascarino says, and I'm sure he wouldn't dispute that. However, you also can't argue with his record as he gets results at most clubs he goes to.

Given Wednesday's position, you can totally understand why they turned to Pulis. They need to get out of the relegation zone, which you would back him to do and long-term they need to push for promotion, which you would also back him to do. If he delivers on that, the fans won't care.
