Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor doesn't believe that John Terry would leave for Derby County, as he backed Wayne Rooney to take charge of the Rams.

A disastrous start to the campaign saw Derby sack Phillip Cocu over the international break and the club are on the lookout for a successor to the Dutchman.

It has been suggested that Terry could be a candidate, with the current Villa assistant known to be keen on becoming a manager one day.

However, speaking to Football Insider, Agbonlahor revealed he thinks Rooney is nailed on for the job and he doubted whether Terry would leave mid-season.

"You might hear rumours about John Terry but for me that job is Wayne Rooney’s. He’s been brought to Derby to be moulded as the next manager and he probably had it agreed when he joined that if Cocu gets sack he gets the job.

"I feel like John Terry is doing a great job at Aston Villa now. I’m sure he’ll want to stay at Aston Villa for the rest of the season. In the future he might get an opportunity but not at the moment."

The Manchester United legend, along with Liam Rosenior, will lead Derby for their game against Bristol City tomorrow.

The verdict

We all know that Agbonlahor is a Villa fan and he's probably looking through claret-and-blue tinted glasses if he thinks Terry wouldn't leave for Derby now, as it's a fantastic opportunity for any aspiring manager.

Whether the former England skipper is the right choice is open to debate though, and Agbonlahor may have a point with Rooney.

Ultimately, we shall see in the coming days and weeks and it will be very interesting to see who Derby turn to.
