In what has increasingly become a season to forget for Bristol City, Lee Johnson's side currently sits just two places and three points above the relegation zone.

After such a disappointing campaign which has seen the Bristolian club drop down the Sky Bet Championship table at an alarming rate, questions have begun to be asked and blame apportioned.

Some have pointed the finger in the direction of Lee Johnson, who has faced increasing amounts of criticism after Bristol City lost eight league matches in a row - the longest losing streak in the entirety of the division.

However, a number of players, who should be performing well for the Robins have failed to do so on a number of occasions this season, may be more worthy of the criticism.

FLW writer Elliott Wheat-Bowen has identified three players who have been absolute flops for Bristol City this season.

Gustav Engvall

As one of Bristol City's key signings in the summer, there was a buzz of anticipation around the arrival of the Swedish international.

After playing a role in IFK Göteborg's success which saw the Swedish side reach the Europa League places in the Allsvenskan.

The 20-year-old striker had been linked to a number of clubs across continental Europe, however, the Swedish striker opted to join Sky Bet Championship side Bristol City.

However, since joining, the Swedish has striker has struggled to settle in England and Lee Johnson - who is facing increasing amounts of pressure to turn Bristol City's season around - has used Gustav Engvall very sparingly despite spending big money on the striker.

Having made only two appearances in the Championship, both of which were off the bench, it is clear that Lee Johnson does not trust the Swedish striker to perform at the necessary level.

Although Engvall possesses a great amount of talent and ability, this season, as a result of a lack of opportunities, a lack of trust and a series of unfortunate injuries, the Swedish striker has proved to be a flop for Bristol City.

Lee Tomlin

After an extremely successful loan period at Ashton Gate which saw Lee Tomlin emerge as not only one of Bristol City's best players in the second half of last season but also one of the best in the Championship, Tomlin was expected to carry on his scintillating form into this season.

Lee Johnson was impressed by the playmaker's performances which led to Bristol City paying Bournemouth a hefty fee in the summer to secure the acquisition of Tomlin's services on a permanent basis.

Even though Tomlin has five goals and six assists in the Sky Bet Championship, with only Tammy Abraham being directly involved in more goals than Tomlin for Bristol City, it would suggest that Tomlin has not been a flop this season.

However, the 28-year-old advanced midfielder's performances have been underwhelming as he has failed to replicate his performances from last season.

With questions being raised about Tomlin's fitness and attitude after rumours that Lee Tomlin and Lee Johnson have fallen out emerged, Tomlin has failed to be the star player for Bristol City this season as it would have been anticipated and expected.

Instead, Tomlin has been unable to sustain that form or a demonstrate the talent and ability he possesses this season as one Bristol City's biggest flops this season.

Korey Smith

As one of Bristol City's loyal servants who helped the club gain promotion to the Championship, Korey Smith has played a pivotal role for Bristol City in previous seasons.

The 26-year-old defensive midfielder had been one of the most impressive assets for the Robins both in League 1 and the Championship.

Korey Smith's reliability and consistency have made him a favourite of Lee Johnson who has used Smith at every opportunity he can.

However, after unfortunately suffering consecutive injury setbacks, since returning to the first team set-up Korey Smith has been unable to re-find his form.

Although Korey Smith has proved in the past that he is capable of performing well in the Championship, this season he has been unable to have any influence on the game as a passenger in midfield which sees him as a flop this season for Bristol City albeit through unfortunate circumstances.
