Although they may still be battling for a place in the play-offs and with it potential promotion to the Premier League, you get the feeling that this has still been far from the most enjoyable or exciting season to be a Middlesbrough fan.

In spite of their strong position in the Championship table when it comes to points, 'Boro are languishing an underwhelming and perhaps unbelievable 21st in terms of goals scored alone, with Britt Assombalonga's strike in Friday's 1-0 win over Stoke just their 45th goal in 43 Championship games this season.

That 'Boro currently sit sixth in the Championship in spite of that is a true testament to their defence, which having conceded just 36 goals this season is the meanest in the division, though the tension around the Riverside Stadium remains despite that hugely impressive record.

Even before a run of six straight defeats that saw Tony Pulis' side go from play-off certainties to play-off contenders, you felt that was a growing sense of frustration and concern with that the 'Boro has employed with unerring dedication throughout his managerial career.

As that run of defeats went on, the calls for Pulis to step away or be sacked from his post at the Riverside, and you feel those will grow louder in the summer if 'Boro fail to convert that play-off push into promotion from the Premier League.

So far chairman Steve Gibson has resisted those calls for change, and regardless of whether or not he continues to do so into the summer, you feel the club must make some form of change to their approach in order to boost the mood from the stands, which may come in the form of their activity in the summer transfer window.

A new recruitment policy of targeting players with a more creative spark would not only improve the morale of the fans in terms of the style of play they are treated to, which would help generate support for Pulis should he be there, or boost the faith in Gibson once more after his decision to stick with Pulis despite the calls from the fans earlier in the season.

Add to that the fact that that extra creative spark could have made all the difference for 'Boro earlier in the season in turning those defeats into draws or even wins, and then that play-off position would be looking all the more promising, and the hopes of a return to the Premier League all the more stronger.
