Middlesbrough continue their pre-season preparations tonight with a friendly against fellow north-east side Gateshead.
It will be a chance for new boss Jonathan Woodgate to see the players in action ahead of the campaign and they will be desperate to impress.
That’s because the former England international has been tasked with building a new-look Boro side after criticism of how Tony Pulis’ side played last season.
Whilst it will inevitably take a lot of time before fans can properly judge Woodgate’s influence on the team, the early team selection can give a slight indication. And, it hasn’t impressed the Boro fans with the XI picked against the non-league outfit.

Midfielder Jonny Howson appears to be starting at right-back tonight, whilst some supporters are also not happy that Danish international forward Martin Braithwaite isn’t involved.
Even though there were some positive comments with Woodgate giving several youngsters a run out, the general feeling was of concern at the state of the Boro squad with under a month until they kick-off the Championship opener at Luton.
Here’s some of the reaction from Twitter…
Squad is shocking

That squad is frightening. Nothing will change unless the remaining deadwood is offloaded and the recruitment team actually manage to attract some decent new players to the club. Not holding my breath.

God we are short everywhere and Howson playing fullback again. Dreading this coming season

That squad needs strengthening to be competitive imo. Good luck to the lads though
