Thomas Meunier has revealed how he could've joined Aston Villa before his transfer to PSG in the summer of last year. Despite the astronomical fees that the French giants can spend on players, the Belgian international claims he was offered more money to join Villa in the Championship.

The Birmingham Mail report how the right-back told SportFoot about the interest from the West Midlands. “I received more financially interesting proposals from other clubs, especially from England, but that was not my priority. Even Aston Villa, who had gone to the Championship, was more generous than the Paris club. When my agent told me that PSG had entered the dance, I told him to forget the other offers.”

In the end, he got his move from Club Brugge to PSG and he hasn't looked back since. Even though he is competing with Dani Alves for a spot in the team, the rotation at the club means he gets regular minutes. Meunier was in action on Saturday as he scored twice from right-back against Dijon, which included a last minute winner.

The Verdict

How Aston Villa would've wished the Meunier had followed the money! Many clubs had been linked with the player, although it was somewhat of a surprise that he ended up at a team the size of PSG. What's more surprising is the defenders revelation that he would've received more money in the Championship. Meunier can be added to the list of Roberto Carlos, Wesley Sneijder and Radamel Falcao, who all nearly made the switch to Villa Park.
