West Bromwich Albion’s unbeaten start to the Sky Bet Championship campaign came to an end on Tuesday night, with Leeds United defeating the Baggies by a goal to nil at Elland Road.
Slaven Bilic’s side moved to the top of the league table with an impressive 2-0 win over QPR on Saturday, and were looking to replicate that performance against a promotion rival in Leeds United on Tuesday.
But the Baggies weren’t at their best against Marcelo Bielsa’s side and were made to pay, when Gjanni Alioski scored the game’s only goal in the 38th minute.
Albion did have their chances to get back into the game, but Kiko Casilla denied Matheus Pereira’s volley to keep his side in the lead.
Similarly, Leeds also had their chances to put the game to bed, but an inspired performance Sam Johnstone in the Baggies’ goal kept the scores at 1-0 – the former Manchester United man pulled off an incredible double save to deny both Patrick Bamford and Helder Costa.
Johnstone was arguably West Brom’s standout performer on Tuesday night, and here, we take a look at Albion fans’ reactions to the 26-year-old’s display…
We pick up our first defeat of the season…
Guessing everyone’s MOTM was Johnstone though? Made some great saves and that double save just on the brink of half-time was outstanding.
Roll on Cardiff!#wba

Sam Johnstone fantastic tonight, an own goal away from one of the finest clean sheets he's likely to ever keep. Superb goalkeeping display & deserves huge credit tonight. The double save 1st half was outstanding. #wba

Johnstone kept us in that tonight. Its easy to look for positives after 1-0 but not 4-0.
Looking forward to the return of Hegazi too. Our most important player in many ways.
Recent results have upped expectations that aren't dampened overnight. Plenty to enjoy, and improve #wba

Disappointing result tonight 2nd half we were brilliant, Ajayi was solid as ever easily the bargain of the summer. Johnstone proving the doubters wrong again, onto Cardiff #wba

Frustrating but entertaining match, Ajayi and Johnstone were fantastic, build up play got better throughout the match. Just need to take a chance when pulling the trigger infront of goal. We'll get there but Leeds defended well, on to Cardiff on Saturday 💪🏻

Really don’t feel that there’s any reason for any Albion fan to worry atm. We were fairly solid throughout the majority of that game tonight and in the second half I felt like we were dominating. Johnstone and Ajayi were the two standouts for me tonight. #wba #LEEWBA

Definitely, of course it's way too competitive a league & playing midweek a lot too. We could, just slightly off it in certain areas & their goal was lucky really, Johnstone looked superb if he can consistently do that we have a right keeper 😊

Will West Brom bounce back with a win against Cardiff?
