Sheffield Wednesday’s summer rebuild could be about to get underway.
An exclusive report from Football League World revealed that the Owls were looking to sign Lee Gregory on a free transfer this summer.
The 32-year-old is set to be a free agent this summer with his contract at Stoke City due to come to an end in the coming weeks.
Gregory scored four goals in the Championship last term after leaving the Potters for a loan spell at Derby County but could now be set to move to South Yorkshire.
So would the striker be a good addition? The team at FLW have their say…
Quiz: Did these 18 players make more than 100 Sheffield Wednesday appearances?
This could be a really good signing for the Owls.
Gregory has found regular game time hard to find in recent seasons, both with Derby County and Stoke City.
But he has shown his quality in front of goal in the past, especially at League One level, having played an important role in Millwall’s promotion-winning campaign in the 2016/17 season.
He scored 18 goals in that season, as they won promotion into the Championship, and will be hoping that he can replicate that type of form with Sheffield Wednesday this term.
The Owls certainly need additional strength in depth in attacking areas of their squad, with the likes of Adam Reach and Jordan Rhodes leaving the club upon the expiration of their contracts at Hillsborough.
I’d be a big fan of this signing.
I was a huge fan of Gregory when he was at Millwall, particularly in League One as he formed an excellent strike partnership with Steve Morison.
I feel that sometimes his goalscoring form doesn’t match the striker’s work-rate and energy up top, and his running off the ball often opens up the game for others.
But Wednesday need to add plenty of goal threat to their squad if they are to escape League One at the first time of asking, and I think Gregory could be a very good signing.
It may be slightly short-termist, but a return to Yorkshire could also help get the best out of him as he would feel settled.
I like Gregory a lot, but I just feel he’s lost his way since leaving Millwall really.
Sheffield Wednesday are a club that will have big expectations placed on their heads after falling into League One and he could well be the man to get them back up.
He is proven at that level and the one above, so you can understand why Darren Moore would be interested.
They need a new striker after the departure of Jordan Rhodes, so I think Gregory would fit the bill for what they are looking for.
I think the financial side of it will be interesting however, as Wednesday’s struggles on that front are well known to many.
