Stewart Donald has promised that 'substantial' investment will be put into Sunderland once his takeover is confirmed by the EFL.

Ellis Short has agreed to sell the club to a consortium that is led by Donald, who also owns Eastleigh, with the National League side since going up for sale.

Whilst the remaining individuals in the consortium remain unknown, the Sunderland Echo revealed how Donald told BBC Radio Solent last week that they would back the club.

"One of the groups has approached me to see whether or not I can provide any funding. I said show me the opportunity and I'll let you know."

"You know what these things are like, people put these consortiums together, but I think it would probably be a substantial investment if I do it."

As well as that, Donald spoke about how he will be excited at trying to turn the north east side around following relegation to League One.

"If it was all sensible, to be part of a team that would restore Sunderland to where they should be, that sounds like a nice challenge."

The Verdict

It's been a whirlwind few days for Sunderland who have seen a lot of major changes at the club.

Firstly, they will be delighted that Short has departed and will also now appreciate what he's done to leave the club. And, they'll be excited with the talk from Donald as he clearly sounds ambitious.

Obviously, he will have to back that up over the summer but despite relegation Sunderland supporters can now have some optimism about what the future could hold.
