Glenn Murray has warned Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion that the promotion race is far from over, with the Brighton and Hove Albion striker tipping Fulham to be in hot pursuit in the New Year.

Leeds moved to the top of the Championship table during the week after beating Hull City 2-0, with West Brom staying second after dropping points against Wigan Athletic.

In addition to the Baggies slipping up, Fulham, Nottingham Forest and Bristol City all dropped points, leaving Leeds and Albion 11 points clear of the chasing pack after 21 fixtures.

Whilst many have been tipping that pair to storm to automatic promotion form here, Murray served both a warning when appearing on Sky Sports’ Soccer Special (11/12/2019, 7:30pm).

"No, I don't think that's game over yet [in chasing the top-two]," Murray told Sky Sports. "There is a big Christmas period coming up and we know what the Championship is like, it's pretty relentless and you have got to keep your main players fit.

"If you lose a couple of those then it can be devastating. I think the race [to finish in the automatic places] is still on and Fulham will be still trying to catch those two [Leeds and West Brom]."

Murray has been playing in the Premier League over the last couple of seasons, but he was part of the promotion-winning squad at Brighton in 2016/17, with the striker scoring 23 goals as the Seagulls finished runners-up to Newcastle United.

The Verdict

Murray is a promotion winner and is well aware of how intense the Championship race can be.

Yes, Leeds and West Brom have created themselves a nice little cushion, but there is a long way to go and a side of Fulham’s quality could really cut the gap.

Both will not be taking their foot off the accelerator.
