Leeds United’s promotion hopes were dealt a blow at the weekend as they were beaten 1-0 by Sheffield United at the weekend.
Chris Basham’s goal capped off a miserable day at Elland Road, with Kiko Casilla being sent off for a foul on Billy Sharp.
But one of the main concerns that Leeds supporters had after the game was the extent of Pontus Jansson’s knee injury that he picked up in the second-half.
The club soon confirmed that the Swedish international is set to miss three weeks of action as he recovers.
It leaves Marcelo Bielsa with a difficult decision to make for their game against Millwall after the international break.
Both Gaetano Berardi and Hugo Diaz are likely to be pushing for a start in Jansson’s absence and Diaz in particular has a point to prove.
The young Spaniard is yet to make a start for Bielsa’s side in the league this season but would be more than deserving of a chance.
It has come as a surprise to see Diaz not being given an opportunity as of yet, as he has been one of the standout performers for the Leeds under 23’s side that currently sit top of the league table.
Diaz is one of the brightest young talents to progress through the youth teams and will feel as though this is his best chance at breaking into the first-team, with Jansson out injured.
Against a Millwall side that are fighting to retain their Championship status, it would be a tough test for the youngster, but he is more than good enough in stepping up to the required standard when needed
Sometimes you need to take risks, and Marcelo Bielsa should definitely be taking one here, as it could turn out to be a successful call.
He needs first-team game time, and now is the perfect time to give Diaz that.
