Peterborough are close to signing Matt Godden from Stevenage, according to Alan Nixon.

Godden scored 10 goals and provided two assists for Stevenage in League Two this season. They were only able to finish in 16th place in another disappointing season.

Darren Sarll was sacked in March after two years in charge with Tunisian Dino Maamria coming in, but he hasn't had much of an impact so far. Losing Godden would be a blow for Maamria and the club because he was the second highest goalscorer in the team behind Danny Newton.

Alan Nixon reported on Twitter that the deal was close to being finished with Nixon pointing out that he is likely to be a replacement for Jack Marriott.

Nottingham Forest will be watching this transfer business because they have been linked with Marriott for a while, so this confirms that there is a good chance he could be joining their club this summer. Karanka has been ambitious so far with significant spending in January, so they are likely to be at the front of the queue for the 23-year-old.

The Verdict

Nixon is right to suggest that Godden is a replacement for Marriott because they will need to prepare for his departure and he's a cheap option that they can bring in, although his goal tally isn't the most impressive.

Aitor Karanka currently has Ben Brereton and Daryl Murphy as his main striking options, so adding a prolific goalscorer is key for Forest if they want to bridge the gap to the play-offs. The Spaniard has targeted specific areas of his squad that need improvement and this is a key area.
