Barnsley are on the search for another manager after Jose Morais was sacked at the end of last season.

The Tykes are aiming to bounce back from their relegation to League One in a similar fashion to the clubs from last season because Wigan, Blackburn and Rotherham all achieved promotion back to the Championship straightaway.

According to Andy Giddings' update on Twitter, Daniel Stendel is the favourite for the vacant Barnsley job.

Stendel managed German side Hannover 04 between April 2016 and March 2017 and was sacked with the club in fourth. His successor Andre Breitenreiter led the club up to the top division at the end of that season, and they have successfully managed to avoid relegation in their first season back.

The Verdict

The 44-year-old's time with Hannover didn't end well, but the club did have high expectations considering they were in fourth when he was sacked, although Breitenreiter's success didn't help his reputation.

This is a bit of a left-field move by the club considering his lack of experience in England as well as his relative obscurity outside of Germany. However, Germany is a hub for promising young coaches, so it's understandable that they are interested in him and this could be the kind of ambitious move that ends up paying off.
