Sunderland secured a solitary point in their match with Burton Albion last night to leapfrog Barnsley and move back into the automatic promotion spots.

Jack Baldwin's header cancelled out Lewis Morgan's own goal, but all the time they were being watched by a player widely considered to be a Sunderland legend.

The club tweeted a picture of current Rangers striker Jermaine Defoe in the stands, taking time out of his SPFL schedule to watch his former side as they edge nervously towards promotion to the Championship.

The 36-year-old scored 37 times for the Black Cats in 93 outings across all competitions and even at the tail end of his career, was widely regarded as one of their finest strikers in recent times.

On a sharp spring evening he was back in the Stadium of Light, watching on as Jack Ross' new era moves towards redemption after the last couple of years capitulation.

Defoe, currently on loan at Ibrox from Bournemouth, has six goals in 12 outings for Steven Gerrard's side.

The Verdict

After watching Charlie Wyke miss a couple of good chances, anyone who happened to see Defoe in the stands might have hoped he had his boots with him.

He's still firing in goals at a good level, despite his advancing years. Even as he moves closer to 40, you wouldn't rule him out of having a spell back in the Championship.
