Manager Simon Grayson revealed that it is a result of an ongoing shin injury that the club had hoped would heal after Humphrey spent two months on the sidelines, following his last appearance for the club in their 3-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday on October the 3rd.

However, this was not the case, and the injury remains a large problem, with the winger facing an operation to correct the problem, which means he will play no further part this season.

When questioned on the matter, the Lilywhites boss told the official site: ‘It is difficult to take, but unfortunately it happens in football. We will give both him and Stevie May (who is also ruled out with a lengthy injury) the best opportunity to be back with us for pre-season next year.’

Humphrey has been a key part of Grayson’s Preston side, and has made 13 appearances, including six starts, in the league before the injury, and this will serve as a major blow for the club in their bid to preserve their Championship status.

Preston are currently 16th in the Championship, seven points clear of danger, after a run of just one defeat in their last ten games.
