Preston North End defied expectations last season and mounted a serious promotion challenge for much of the year.

Right up until the end of the year, Preston were in contention to sneak into the top six and challenge for promotion via the play-offs.

In a division in which the likes of Aston Villa and Newcastle United were splashing big cash, Preston’s success on a small budget was testament to the shrewd business done by Simon Grayson last summer.

Grayson has brought in a number of talented players in the attacking midfield regions, for example, such as Callum Robinson, Tom Barkhuizen and Daryl Horgan.

The undoubted star of the show last season, though, was Aiden McGeady.

McGeady was on loan from Everton and his displays on the wing excited the Preston fans.

The Republic of Ireland international is definitely their number one target this summer but Middlesbrough have recently emerged as another potential destination.

Wages may be a stumbling block in McGeady’s potential move to Preston so Grayson will need to start assessing other options.

One man that he could look at is Will Buckley.

Buckley recently became a free-agent after being released by Sunderland so he would be affordable if they can strike a decent wage agreement with him.

Although his progress has halted during loan spells with Sheffield Wednesday, Birmingham and Leeds over the last two years, the 27-year-old still has bags of talent and has shown his quality in the Championship before.

On a free transfer, Preston should definitely look to give the former Rochdale and Brighton winger a lifeline in the second tier.

Preston fans – would you like to sign Buckley? Let us know below…
