What Simon Grayson's transfer plans are for Preston North End this summer is yet to be seen, but the former Leeds United boss should dive into the lower divisions for hidden talent.

Preston striker Eoin Doyle, who hasn't reached the heights of last season at Chesterfield, may turn his loan move at Portsmouth permanent, so could the two clubs agree a swap deal to bring £170k-rated forward Conor Chaplin to Deepdale?

The 20-year-old is one of the most promising prospects to come out of Pompey's youth academy since Jed Wallace left for the Championship in 2015.

Chaplin made his debut for the ex-FA Cup winners at the age of 17 after scoring eleven goals in the same number of matches for the under-18 team, coming in a defeat to Accrington Stanley.

Since then the versatile striker has gone from strength to strength and is now one of the first names on the team sheet at Fratton Park - featuring in just under 100 games for the south-coast club despite having only turned 20 a matter of months ago.

The reason why Preston should be searching for his signature is because he is a very impressive talent and Portsmouth wouldn't allow their key starlet to depart on the cheap, so including him in a deal for Doyle to go the other way may allow the Lilywhites to acquire Conor Chaplin on a less-expensive transfer fee.

It would be a gamble admittedly, allowing an attacker from two divisions below to lead the line in the second-tier.

However, it's a risk Grayson should be willing to take and ultimately could help them push for the top-six next season.
