Preston North End are said to be interested in striker, James Wilson (according to the Daily Record), who has recently been released from Manchester United.

The report also claims that Scottish side, Aberdeen are hopeful of landing Wilson's signature before the new season gets underway in August.

Wilson spent last season on loan with Aberdeen, making 24 league appearances and scored four goals in total in his time with the club.

But the 23-year-old is likely to have to take a significant wage cut from what he was on with Manchester United, and it remains to be seen as to whether Wilson is willing to do that.

Preston could be a tempting offer for Wilson as well though, as he has previously played in the Championship earlier in his career.

He spent a season with Brighton and Hove Albion, as they narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League, as they were beaten by Sheffield Wednesday in their play-off semi-final.

Wilson then moved to Derby in the 2016/2017 season, where he made just four appearances for the Rams before leaving the club.

But he hasn't featured for the Manchester United first-team since the 2015/2016 season, so Wilson will have known that his long-term future was away from Old Trafford.

He'll be hoping to have his long-term future resolved at the earliest of opportunities heading into the summer, with the new season getting underway in August.

The Verdict:

This could be a smart bit of business by Preston if they can land his signature.

Wilson hasn't endured the best of times in the Championship in the past, but if he can hit the ground running, then Preston could have a real talent on their hands.

He has made a small number of appearances for the Manchester United first-team in the past, which shows that he is highly-rated, and given that he's still only 23, he could have a bright future ahead of him with the Lilywhites.
