If anyone has been catching the headlines following the midweek results, it will be Simon Grayson's Preston North End who were able to, not only beat, but thrash strong relegation candidates Bristol City on Tuesday night.

The Lilywhites are just unstoppable to beat, especially at home.

The last side to go away from Deepdale with a victory is Arsenal in the FA Cup Third Round and in the Championship it was a 4-1 defeat to Leeds United over the festive.

One player has been key to that, £3.4 million-rated wide-man Aiden McGeady.

The Republic of Ireland has without a doubt been Preston's Player of the Season since arriving on loan from top-flight outfit Everton last summer.

The 31-year-old was surplus to requirements on Merseyside so he completed a move to Lancashire towards the end of the transfer window in August, and he probably hasn't regretted putting that pen to paper.

McGeady has, in fact, contributed to 15 league goals this campaign and there's still six games to be played for Preston North End, who will be chasing the top-six until it's mathematically impossible.

He's hit the net on seven occasions, most recently in their 1-1 home draw to Nottingham Forest last weekend - but has also provided eight assists and that has proved vital in the club's success this season.

It isn't a bad record for someone who predominately plays on the wing.

Mentioning his position, Aiden McGeady would be extremely important for Grayson's squad depth if he were to sign the player on a permanent basis this summer. The versatility he offers is huge, being able to play on the left as well but mostly prefers the right.

The impact the former Celtic man brings to the side can't be forgotten and would be the difference for Preston of reaching the play-offs next season.

Even if they do reach the top-six this campaign, it would be very difficult for them to overcome the likes of Leeds United and Huddersfield.

Either way, the club need to splash out the cash in the upcoming transfer window and sign Aiden McGeady to guarantee another push into the top-half next year.
