Preston North End make major player announcement

Sunday afternoon could be a memorable one for Preston as they look to beat Burton Albion and hope Derby slip up which would see them take the final play-off spot.

Yet, even if that doesn’t materialise it will certainly be a memorable occasion for John Welsh with the midfielder set to depart North End after six years with the club.

The club confirmed the news this morning, revealing that the 34-year old will leave once his contract expires in the summer.

Even though he has been hit with injuries this year, Welsh has established himself as a firm favourite with the fans because of the drive and determination he showed on the pitch in almost 200 games for the club.

As well as that, he is clearly well-respected in the squad having been named as club captain.

The former Liverpool man will receive a pitchside presentation before Sunday’s crucial clash. And, speaking to the official site, boss Alex Neil said it was fully deserved.

He has been excellent to work with and has been a model professional and I am delighted we are giving him a send off before kick-off on Sunday.”

The Verdict

Welsh is a favourite with the North End fans and deserves that status because of all he has given to the club over the years.

From a football perspective it makes sense for all parties to move on in the summer though, although a coaching role down the line may bring them back together.

Sunday will be a nice moment for Welsh personally and he will want the day topped off by the side making the top six.
