Ethan Walker has returned to Preston North End following the club’s decision to recall him from his loan spell at Altrincham.
The 17-year-old only managed three starts and one substitute appearance for the Robins since joining the club in December, but did provide two assists over those four appearances.
In a statement from Altrincham, the club acknowledged that Walker’s opportunities had been limited at the club due to their ‘own resurgence in form, and the number of enforced substitutions they have had to make.’
The 17-year-old did make his first team debut for the Lilywhites in a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa last season, and appeared as an 80th minute substitute earlier this term when North End beat Bradford City 4-0 in the EFL Cup.
In the wake of the news some North End fans speculated on the reason to why the player had been recalled, with some suggesting it was down to the lack of game time and others saying it was for cover for the first team.
It remains to be seen the exact reason behind Walker’s recall but my guessing would be the lack of game time on offer at Altrincham.
At only 17 it may be difficult to see Walker being immediate cover to Alex Neil’s first team and another loan move this window may be on the cards.
Neil gave Walker his league debut and used him earlier this campaign in the EFL Cup but could feel the forward’s development may benefit from another loan spell.
