Preston North End are set to win the race for highly-rated Motherwell striker Louis Moult, according to reports in The Daily Record.

The 25-year-old Englishman has been in electric form for the Well this season, and leads the SPFL goalscoring charts with an impressive eight strikes.

Starting his career with hometown club Stoke City, Moult enjoyed loan spells at a variety of clubs whilst on the books at The Bet365 Stadium, before successful spells in non-league football with Nuneaton and Wrexham earned him a move north of the border.

Preston boss Alex Neil is said to be a huge admirer of the forward, and will look to tie up a deal for the player in the new year, as he attempts to guide his side towards the top-six.

The Verdict

Preston already have a number of talented strikers on their books, including Sean Maguire, Jordan Hugill and Callum Robinson, so interest in Moult suggests that one of these could be on their way out of Deepdale next month.

The most likely candidate is Hugill, who was linked with a move away in the summer, so Moult could come in as a direct replacement for the highly-rated striker.

Moult has impressed since joining Motherwell, and has made the step up to the Scottish top flight from non-league English football with relative ease.

Can he cut it in the English second tier, however?

He looks to be a natural finisher, but only time will tell.
