As with Reading last season, Preston North End are failing to get the credit they deserve for a stunning run of Championship form.
The North Enders are never fancied and always written off despite the fact that they’ve made two solid finishes of 11th place since returning to the Championship.
They appear to have taken a step up from last year, and cut out the horrible starts that have plagued their finishes in previous years (they only gained six points from their first eight games last year).
Preston could easily be viewed as the best ran club in the Championship, spending little but finishing well.
They boast the best defensive record in the Championship, only letting in six goals so far this year, and have only suffered defeat once to Derby County, at Pride Park.
The Championship has almost seen the table turned upside down this season with the likes of Sheffield United, Bristol City and Cardiff leading the way, but Preston deserve the greatest praise for their excellent start, which they simply aren’t getting.
Yes, Chief Executive John Kay has done a superb job with the finances at Preston and the running of the club, but kudos are also due to Alex Neil.
Neil was given a fairly simple task in inheriting a squad from a manager who left the club on merit of a good job done, rather than a manager who was sacked and left a squad low on confidence.
However, not only has he managed to implement good additions to the squad that have improved the side, he’s also dealt with keeping Jordan Hugill, despite his transfer request.
He’s taking a squad with no star players, no talisman, to new heights.
This is a team that works hard and has monumental belief in its ability, and through that alone looks to defy the odds this season.
Hats off to Preston.
They are ran magnificently, have a shed load of players with the right mentality who want to work hard, and I see no reason why they can’t keep up this excellent form.
They deserve much more credit than they’re getting.
