Preston North End have confirmed the signing of former Charlton defender, Patrick Bauer on a three-year deal at Deepdale.

Bauer recently announced that he had turned down a new deal at Charlton and would become a free agent at the end of this month.

But Preston have evidently wasted no time in signing him, as they announced the deal just a day after it was revealed that he would leave Lee Bowyer's side.

The 26-year-old established himself as a firm fans favourite at The Valley with a number of impressive performances to his name.

He'll be fondly remembered by Charlton supporters for his contribution in their promotion-winning team last season.

Bauer netted an injury-time winner against Sunderland in the League One play-off final to see the Addicks make a return back into the Championship.

Speaking in an interview with the club's official website, Bauer expressed his delight at signing for the Lilywhites ahead of the new season.

"I am really excited to be here. I am happy to play finally in the Championship again and I am really delighted."

Preston boss, Alex Neil admitted that he was pleased to get the deal over the line and expects Bauer to add to the competition for places in their defence.

"Patrick is a strong and powerful defender who we have monitored closely. He has experience of playing at the top level in Portugal and adapted very well to English football in the past few years and he will add more competition to our defence in the central positions."

The Verdict:

This is a smart bit of business by Preston.

Bauer looked impressive last season for Charlton, and I was surprised to see him leave the club after such a successful spell with Lee Bowyer's side.

Signing him on a free is a smart move by Preston and I think Bauer is the type of player that could thrive in their squad, providing he's given regular game time.
