Preston are one of those sides that always seem to be there or thereabouts, but never break into the top six when it really matters.

There's plenty to be admired about them, they've never benefitted from the Premier League's millions and yet they're never far away when February comes. solid would perhaps be a good way to describe them, consistent or even adequate.

They're not likely to bother those who like to predict the top six, nor will they be hoping for results elsewhere to save them as the season draws to a close.

23-year old Ben Pearson is their key player, capped by England from U16 to U20 level, the former Manchester United youth player is carving out a reputation all of his own in Lancashire. The diminutive midfielder is comfortable on the ball, creative but often from the deeper positions. He's as likely to assist the assister as he is get one himself, but he's now played 74 Championship games for Alex Neill's side and only gets better each time.

Ryan Ledson is another unfamiliar name to most, but he's one to watch at Deepdale. He too has been capped by England from U16 to U20 level, but he came through the ranks at Everton before a spell at QPR. He's only recently joined from Oxford United, amassing 66 League One matches at the Kassam Stadium.  He's also a central midfielder and will form a youthful, but effective partnership with Pearson next season.

Alex Neill is happy with his pre-season preparations as they once again bob along under the radar. The signings haven't made the headlines, but Preston North end are about far more than individuals. Neill is ensuring his side are prepared and ready for the new campaign, but he's also aware nothing is guaranteed.

With Swansea, Stoke and Derby all up in the first six games, any hopes of a top ten finish will be tested in the extreme before the summer is over. QPR, Norwich and Bolton offer opportunities to get points on the board, but by the time September is upon us we'll have a much clearer idea as to whether Preston are once again going to achieve more than expected, or whether this is the season that the Premier League's millions begin to adversely affect their progress.

They're priced at 8/1 with Sky Bet, the same as both Sheffield clubs, which suggests a relegation battle isn't on the cards, but also that a promotion push might be beyond them. Given their exploits last season, folk would be unwise to write them off before a ball has been kicked.
