John Welsh has signed a new deal with Preston North End that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2018 – the club have confirmed.
The 32-year-old extended his existing deal by an extra year and has joined fellow PNE players Tom Clarke, Greg Cunningham and Paul Gallagher in extending his contract beyond the end of this season.
Welsh has been at the club since 2012, joining from Tranmere Rovers, and has made over 140 appearances for the club.
He was voted fan’s Player of the Year after his first season and is the joint club captain alongside defender Tom Clarke.
Welsh began this year’s campaign unable to even make the PNE bench but has since broken back into the fold, starting Preston’s last game against Brighton.
The Lilywhites are facing a tough run of games towards the end of October, playing the 3 teams that currently sit atop the Championship.
However, there are encouraging signs for the side, as they are unbeaten in 4 and despite being 18th are only 6 points off the Play-Offs.
